Natural Remedies vs. Medical Treatment for Tinnitus
Tinnitus is incessant ringing in the ears. In some people it can start slowly and subtly with an awareness of a distant light high pitched sound in the one or both ears which gets progressively louder over time. In other sufferers the ringing comes on suddenly due to trauma, side effects from a medication, or any number of reasons including being subjected to very loud music or on the job noises.
It may be as loud as an alarm clock, or remain subtle and softer only to increase in volume and change pitch all of a sudden. Many rock musicians often have tinnitus after years of loud guitar amplifiers blaring at them.
The ringing can lead to serious sleep deprivation which then exacerbates the symptoms. Stress contributes to the increase in sound levels and compounds as the tinnitus patient continues to suffer.
There is no known cure for tinnitus, and in some people it will resolve over time with no treatment at all. But for most it will continue and may get much worse, as they seek various treatments. Medical treatments have had little or no success however.
The good news is that the success of holistic tinnitus treatments surpasses the medical help currently available. Patients have seen relief from simple training to refocus their attention away from the sounds. The use of a white noise generator, such as playing a CD with these soothing sounds, using an MP3 player or sound generating machine, can mask the noise and allow the patient to sleep. Getting good rest can relieve the symptoms and lower stress levels.
Acupuncture and acupressure have been employed to apply stimulation to certain nerve areas and help block or re-channel the impulse to the nerves that produce the sounds. Relaxation exercises like deep breathing and meditation have improved the ringing symptoms in some people, and combined with other therapies have produced positive results. Many chiropractors have been able to successfully treat tinnitus in their patients, with manipulation of the neck and facial areas.
There is a long list of herbal remedies and supplements which have been said to help. A popular supplement that has shown some promise is melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that can be taken at bedtime in tablet form. It helps produce better sleep, and in studies has been proven to aid some tinnitus patients. It has few side effects and can be obtained at any pharmacy or vitamin supplier.
Ginkgo Biloba is an herbal remedy that has been studied many times for use in tinnitus. It has been a promising treatment, and the lack of any side effects at all have led to many people making use of the natural product of an ancient tree.
Tinnitus patients are advised to seek out holistic and natural treatments or a combination of these to find the best remedy for their suffering. Having and maintain a positive outlook is a big help while looking towards relief.
